Current Research 2005-2006

  • “The Contingent Effects of Transactive Memory: When Is it More Beneficial to Know What Others Know,” coauthored by Yuquing Ren (Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University), Kathleen Carley (Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University) and Linda Argote (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University) was accepted for publication in Management Science.  The work is co-funded by the Army Research Institute and the Center.
  • “The Effect of Information Technology on Knowledge Depreciation and Transfer,” coauthored by Michael J. Ashworth (Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University ), Linda Argote (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University ), and Tridas Mukhopadhyay (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University ), is co-funded by the National Science Foundation and the Center.  Research was presented at the Annual INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Meeting in November 2005.
  • “Absorptive Capacity Revisited: External Knowledge, Social Networks and Firms Innovative Capabilities,”  a doctoral dissertation successfully defended by Marco Tortoriello (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University ), a Research Fellow at the Center.  The dissertation was chaired by Professor Bill McEvily.
  • “Organizational Learning and Forgetting: The Effect of Turnover and Structure,” coauthored by Rukmnini Rao (IBM) and Linda Argote (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University ).
  • “Organizational Learning: Review and Future Directions,” by Linda Argote (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University) and Gergana Todorova (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University) is being prepared for the International Review of Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

 

Past Research Projects 2004-2005

·         " Individual Experience and Experience Working Together: Predicting Learning Rates from Knowing Who Knows What and Knowing How to Work Together,"  coauthored by Ray Reagans (Graduate School of Business, Columbia University ), Linda Argote (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University), Daria Brooks ( Northwestern University Hospital and Children’s Memorial Hospital ). This project examines the effects of different types of experience (individual, group, organizational) on organizational learning and performance improvements in a teaching hospital.  Published in 2005 by Management Science, 51, 869-881.  

 

·         "Social Identity and Knowledge Transfer Across Groups," coauthored by Aimée A. Kane (Leonard N. Stern School of Business , New York University), Linda Argote (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University ), John Levine (Department of Psychology, University of Pittsburgh ). This project, which is jointly funded by the Decision, Risk and Management Sciences (DRMS) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) examines how sharing a superordinate identity affects knowledge transfer across groups.  A study from this line of work was published in the January 2005 issue of Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, 96, 56-71.  

 

·         "Information Technology and Organizational Learning: An Empirical Analysis," coauthored by Michael J. Ashworth ( School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University), Linda Argote (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University), Tridas Mukhopadhyay (Tepper, Carnegie Mellon University). This project, which is jointly funded by the Innovation and Organizational Change (IOC) program of the National Science Foundation, examines how the introduction of technology affects organizational learning in multiple groups at a financial services firm.  An initial paper from this line of work was published in the 2004 Proceedings of the 25th Annual International Conference on Information Systems (pp. 11-21) and was presented at their annual meeting in December 2004.
